The Offut Lake Resort just a few miles north of Tenino celebrates the new year by hosting a Polar Plunge off the dock into the frigid waters.

The jump into the water takes place at 10 a.m. This is the eighth year of the event at the lake. Following the wake-up call, The Weekender suggests you stay for the Bloody Mary Bar at Offut Lake Resort. Last year dozens made the leap.

“It stings, but it’s invigorating,” said Michael Kimbrough last year, who greeted the new year with a belly flop.

The water temperature is typically about 40 degrees.

Bob and Rebecca Pogue own the resort. The Pogues have hosted the annual polar plunge since 2011. The event started with a Bloody Mary Bar and breakfast, with the plunge beginning at 10 a.m.

“It was my idea the first year,” Bob Pogue said. “I chickened out.”

Polar plunge events are a popular New Year’s Day tradition around the world, he added during last year’s plunge.

“It’s like they wash their old year away and kind of wake themselves up to start the new one,” he said.

“It was awesome, I had a blast. Happy New Year,” said Brandon Navarre last year after his icy swim to shore.

Some wear swimsuits while others show up in costumes. After the jump, they will rush for outdoor heaters and a firepit.
